When does each session trade?
Each exchange sets its own hours in local time. These are the regular sessions for four of the markets we follow most, as published by the exchanges or reported by trade press:
| Market | Regular trading hours (local time) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Stock Exchange | 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., then 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. | Japan Exchange Group |
| Hong Kong Exchanges | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., then a closing auction | HKEX |
| London Stock Exchange (Main Market) | 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. | QuotedData |
| New York Stock Exchange | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET | NYSE |
Local hours stay the same through the year, but the gap between time zones changes when countries move their clocks for daylight saving time, and they do not all change on the same dates. Exchange holidays also differ by country, so one region can be closed while the others trade. Our calendar lists upcoming market holidays and data releases.
How do the sessions connect?
Each recap picks up where the previous session left off. The Asia recap covers moves made while Europe and the Americas were closed. The Europe recap follows the handoff from Asia. The Americas recap closes the global trading day. For a longer guide, read how the global trading day works.
What is the day ahead?
Before the U.S. open, our day-ahead preview lists the economic data, earnings and central bank events scheduled for that day, with the time each is due. Current prices for stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities are on our markets page.
