Stocks traded on their normal schedule for Columbus Day, but the U.S. bond market was closed. SIFMA lists Oct. 12 as a 2026 bond market holiday, so there were no new Treasury yield readings; the 10-year yield remains at Friday's 5.24%.

Why did the Nasdaq fall today?

Memory-chip makers sold off. Micron fell 3.9% and Sandisk 6.0% after Chinese memory maker CXMT announced progress on a new memory-cell design, Yahoo Finance reported. The PHLX Semiconductor Index dropped about 2.7%, and Nvidia lost 1.3%, Yahoo Finance data showed.

Main movers

  • Meta Platforms rose 3.4% after Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told the Financial Times that its AI model had caught up with leading labs, Yahoo Finance reported.

Why did oil prices rise?

Attacks on Saudi Arabia outweighed the prospect of more supply. Brent crude settled up $1.93, or 1.8%, at $106.65 a barrel, the highest since Sept. 15, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose $1.89, or 2%, to $93.74, Reuters reported.

Reuters said a Houthi strike on Riyadh's international airport on Saturday killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, and further attacks followed on Sunday. A tanker was struck by a drone near Oman's Sohar and another was damaged while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters said, citing UKMTO. Prices had slipped earlier after President Donald Trump said Russia would supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, according to Reuters.
