Why it matters

  • The NYSE and Nasdaq do not list Columbus Day as a 2026 holiday, so stocks trade normally, but SIFMA lists Oct. 12 as a U.S. bond market holiday.
  • S&P 500 futures were flat around 8:45 a.m. ET, while Brent crude rose about 2% to $106.79 a barrel after weekend attacks on Saudi Arabia and a tanker, Trading Economics said.
  • JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup report before Tuesday's open. September CPI is due Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by PPI and retail sales Thursday.

The day ahead: scheduled events and what forecasters expect.

U.S. stocks trade as usual on Monday, Oct. 12, even though it is Columbus Day. Neither the New York Stock Exchange nor Nasdaq lists the day among its 2026 market holidays. The bond market is a different story: the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) lists Columbus Day, Oct. 12, among its U.S. holiday recommendations, which cover trading in Treasury and other bonds. There is no major U.S. economic data today.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day 2026?

Yes. The NYSE's holiday list for 2026 does not include Columbus Day, and Nasdaq's market-hours data show regular trading from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET today. The Federal Reserve's calendar says its daily and weekly statistical releases scheduled for today will come out Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Where are futures before the open?

Little changed. Stocks rose Friday, with the S&P 500 up 0.59% to 7,811.54; see our Americas Friday recap.

Why is oil rising?

Middle East tensions flared over the weekend. Trading Economics said Saudi Arabia's main airport came under attack again on Sunday amid renewed fighting involving Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, and another tanker was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent touched $102.35 early Monday before climbing to $106.79, Yahoo Finance data showed.

Hurricane Isaias aftermath

Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, around 8:30 p.m. CDT on Friday, Oct. 9, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. By 1 a.m. CDT Saturday it was a post-tropical cyclone over southern Alabama with winds of 65 mph. Trading Economics reported on Oct. 11 that the U.S. would release up to 4 million barrels from strategic reserves to help offset supply disruptions caused by the storm.
