Why did bank stocks fall after earnings?

Earnings per share rose at all four banks, but investors focused on weaker spots. Citigroup earned $2.85 a share on revenue of $23.8 billion, up 8%, the bank said. Its shares fell 5.6%. Markets revenue of $6.1 billion was up 6% from a year earlier but down 13% from the second quarter, according to a TIKR analysis published on Yahoo Finance.

Wells Fargo earned $1.87 a share, up from $1.66, the bank said. Revenue of $21.87 billion missed the $22.31 billion analysts expected, and net interest income of $12.52 billion fell short of the $12.66 billion forecast, MT Newswires reported. The stock lost 3.1%.

JPMorgan Chase earned $5.57 a share, including $658 million of net investment securities losses, the bank said. Its shares fell 0.9%. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said "large fiscal deficits, sticky inflation, elevated asset prices, rising interest rates and geopolitical conditions continue to shift under the surface."

Goldman Sachs earned $17.01 a share, up from $12.25, as equities revenue jumped 72% to $6.44 billion, the firm said. The stock rose about 3% before the bell but closed down 0.2%. Revenue fell 8% from the second quarter. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley report on Wednesday, MT Newswires said.

Other movers

  • Johnson & Johnson fell 5.7%, the Dow's worst performer. It raised its full-year outlook, but the new midpoints missed Wall Street estimates, MT Newswires reported.
  • Chip stocks stayed weak after Tuesday's rout in Seoul. The PHLX Semiconductor Index slipped 0.23%, its sixth straight loss, Barron's said. Applied Materials fell 6.7% and Micron 3.6%, while Nvidia rose 1% and AMD 1.9%, Yahoo Finance data showed.

What happened to Treasury yields and oil?

Yields eased as the bond market reopened after Monday's holiday. The 10-year yield fell to 5.21% from 5.24% on Friday, and the 2-year yield slipped to 4.79% from 4.80%, Treasury Department data showed.

West Texas Intermediate crude rose 40 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $94.14 a barrel, while Brent fell 96 cents, or 0.9%, to $105.69, Reuters reported. Gold futures slipped 0.2% to about $4,181 an ounce.
