Why did stocks rise today?

Anthropic publicly filed its S-1 registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday and plans to trade under the ticker "ANT," Yahoo Finance reported. The filing showed revenue of $16.3 billion for the six months through June and a net loss of $80.7 billion, mostly from accounting charges, Yahoo Finance said. The filing put AI back in focus, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were set for their biggest one-day gain in more than a month, Reuters reported.

AI stocks still swung through the day on worries about the cost of borrowing for data centers and chips, the AP said. Meta Platforms fell 1.88% after it said it plans to raise $35 billion by selling stock and could raise another $60 billion through a new share class, the AP reported.

The company reported revenue of $34.3 billion, up 1.5%, and adjusted earnings of $1.31 a share, and raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to $5.04 to $5.06 a share, its results release showed.

Why did Brazil's stock market crash?

Brazil's Ibovespa fell 13.88% to 176,608.23, its lowest since Aug. 31, after Lula won the presidential runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro, Money Times reported. Investors had not expected the result and worry about more government spending and debt, the AP said. A drop of more than 10% early in the session triggered a 30-minute trading halt, the first circuit breaker since March 2020, and the dollar jumped 8.21% to 5.4029 reais, Money Times said. In New York, the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF fell 19.82% to $34.15, Yahoo Finance data showed.

What happened to oil and Treasury yields?

Oil eased on hopes for diplomacy as Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials held talks in Tehran, though attacks on Saudi Arabia limited the losses, Reuters reported. December Brent settled down 91 cents, or 0.8%, at $115.81 a barrel, and U.S. crude fell $1.51, or 1.46%, to $101.76, Reuters said.

The 10-year Treasury yield held at 5.00% and the 2-year eased to 4.68% from 4.69%, Treasury Department data showed. Treasury sold $69 billion of two-year notes at a high yield of 4.708%, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.59, TreasuryDirect results showed. Gold futures rose 0.54% to about $4,029.50 an ounce, Yahoo Finance data showed.

What's next for markets this week?

The Fed's two-day meeting starts Tuesday, with the decision Wednesday, Oct. 28. The widespread expectation is that the Fed will leave rates unchanged after raising them last month for the first time in three years, the AP said. Treasury sells $70 billion of five-year notes Tuesday and $44 billion of seven-year notes Thursday. Alphabet and Microsoft report Wednesday and Amazon on Thursday, the AP said.
