Why did the Nikkei rise on Tuesday?
Wall Street's gains and cheaper oil helped. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record on Monday, and lower crude prices supported Tokyo shares, IBTimes reported. Our Monday Americas recap has the U.S. session.
The broader Topix rose 0.4% to 4,163.61. Electronic-parts maker Taiyo Yuden was the top gainer, up 6.15% to 11,135 yen, and chip-testing equipment maker Advantest rose 1.7%, according to IBTimes. SoftBank Group fell 2.7%.
Japan also held a 10-year government bond auction on Tuesday. The 10-year yield hit 3% last month for the first time since 1996, IBTimes said. The yen traded near 158.07 per dollar in European hours, Yahoo Finance data showed.
Hong Kong: biotech and AI lead
The Hang Seng added 240.22 points. The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.94% to 4,223, and the H-share index gained 0.96% to 8,128, BigGo Finance reported. Turnover was HK$98.265 billion.
Drug developers led. Zai Lab jumped 9.07%, GenScript Biotech rose 7.67% and WuXi Biologics gained 4.51%, both to records, ahead of a European cancer conference on Oct. 23–27 where Chinese companies will present 31 drug studies, according to BigGo Finance. AI developer Zhipu rose 7.59%. Anta Sports fell 2.53% and New World Development lost 3.51%.
Mainland Chinese markets stayed shut for the Golden Week holiday. They reopen on Thursday, Oct. 8, when Stock Connect trading between Hong Kong and the mainland also resumes, BBN Times reported.
