Why are European stocks up today?

European stocks are up because the rally that followed the Democratic sweep of the U.S. Congress carried into a second day, Trading Economics said, with investors also focused on earnings. The Bank of England raised Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage point to 4% in an 8-1 vote, its Monetary Policy Summary said. Catherine Mann voted for a half-point rise to 4.25%. The bank said higher energy prices have added to inflation pressure. "Monetary policy is not on a pre-set path," it said. Its next decision is due Thursday, Dec. 17. Trading Economics said it was the first rate rise in more than three years. Global Market News has the full story.
