Why did Asian stocks rise today?
AI-related shares rallied after Anthropic's IPO filing showed strong revenue growth, which lifted sentiment before big tech earnings this week, Trading Economics said. Gains on Wall Street on Monday and easing oil prices also helped. In Tokyo, Advantest rose about 9.6%, Ibiden 9.1%, Sumco 5.6%, SoftBank Group about 5.2%, Lasertec 5.1% and Tokyo Electron about 2.6%, it said. The yen weakened to about 157.82 per dollar around 13:14 GMT, Yahoo Finance data showed, from about 156.83 on Monday.
Seoul led the region. SK hynix rose 6.82%, Samsung Electronics 5.05% and SK Square 10.92%, Trading Economics said. Both chipmakers report third-quarter results this week. South Korea's third-quarter GDP grew 1% from the previous quarter, beating a 0.8% forecast, as the chip boom lifted exports and investment, it said. Reports of Qatari mediation in the Middle East also eased worries about oil supply.
Why did China and Hong Kong stocks fall?
Heavy losses in technology stocks outweighed stronger industrial profits in China, Trading Economics said. Industrial profits rose 15.5% from a year earlier to 6.03 trillion yuan in January through September. Cambricon fell 5.68%, Hygon 5.54%, NAURA 5.51%, Eoptolink 5.60% and SMIC 2.70%. Investors are watching the Communist Party's Fifth Plenum for policy signals, it said.
The Hang Seng fell 0.73% as losses in health care, consumer and manufacturing stocks outweighed tech gains, Trading Economics said. Worries about returns on heavy AI spending persisted after Meta's plan to raise up to $95 billion for AI infrastructure. Duality Biotherapeutics sank 21.9%, Xiaomi fell 2.3% and Meituan 1.5%. Investors are waiting for HSBC's results for clues on Hong Kong banks, it said; HSBC's London shares fell after the report, as our Europe recap shows.
How did Taiwan and Australia trade?
Taiwan's market reopened on Tuesday. The Taiwan Stock Exchange's daily Taiex history shows no sessions between Thursday, Oct. 22, and Tuesday, Oct. 27; why Monday's market was shut is in our Asia Monday recap. Nanya Technology rose 6.5%, Wiwynn 6.0% and TSMC 0.6%, as traders stayed cautious before the Fed decision, it said.
Australia's ASX 200 rose about 0.5% to 8,850 as easing oil prices calmed inflation worries before Wednesday's September inflation data, Trading Economics said. Miners gained on firmer copper and iron ore, with BHP up 3.5% and Rio Tinto 2.5%, and Qantas rose 3.2%.
