Why is the FTSE 100 falling today?

The FTSE 100 is falling because two of its biggest companies dropped after their results. HSBC was down about 6.8% around 13:00 GMT, Yahoo Finance data showed. Its third-quarter pretax profit rose 32% to $9.6 billion, short of the $9.7 billion analysts expected, and its revenue disappointed, Trading Economics said. The bank kept its full-year outlook. Reckitt was down about 4.5% after cutting its annual sales growth forecast on weaker North American revenue, it said.

U.K. shop price inflation rose to 2.1% in October from 1.4% in September, above the 1.6% expected, Trading Economics said, adding to worries about household spending. Oil stocks fell as crude eased, with BP down about 1.5% and Shell 1.3%. Rio Tinto rose about 1.8% as miners gained, Yahoo Finance data showed.

Which European stocks are moving?

Earnings drove most moves. Mercedes-Benz was down about 3.7% around 13:00 GMT, Yahoo Finance data showed, after it lowered its 2026 profit margin outlook for its car division, citing tougher conditions in China and higher fourth-quarter costs, Trading Economics said. Beiersdorf fell about 3.0% after narrowly missing third-quarter sales growth forecasts, it said.

On the upside, Porsche rose about 4.5% after a profit recovery in the first nine months and a reaffirmed 2026 outlook, Trading Economics said. Siemens Energy gained about 4.2%, Infineon 2.8%, Schneider Electric 2.6% and ASML 1.7%, Yahoo Finance data showed. Novartis was up about 0.3% after beating earnings forecasts and raising its full-year guidance, Trading Economics said. Orange was little changed after raising its 2026 core earnings growth target.

Why are French stocks under pressure?

The CAC 40 was up about 0.35%, but French worries weighed on sentiment earlier in the day, Trading Economics said. French consumer confidence fell to 80 in October from 85 in September, below expectations and the lowest since June 2013, it said, as rising bond yields, austerity disputes and cost-of-living protests weigh on households.

December Brent crude was down about 0.5% at $115.22 a barrel around 13:04 GMT, Yahoo Finance data showed, as Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish officials held talks with Iranian leaders aimed at easing regional tensions, Trading Economics said. The euro was at about $1.1153 and the pound at about $1.3328 around 13:13 GMT, both weaker against the dollar.

What comes next for European markets?

The Fed and the ECB are both widely expected to leave rates unchanged this week, Trading Economics said; the Fed decides Wednesday, Oct. 28, and the ECB on Thursday.
